5 out of 5 stars More stories from the legendary Naruto   December 31, 2009

More stories from the world of Naruto - excellent fun and easy to watch again and again.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed by its own conception   September 27, 2009
Daniel Lackenby (Liverpool, UK)
This suffers for being part of the infamous filler part of the series, the part at which they had stopped using Kishimoto sensei's work as a basis in order to let the manga regain some ground and it'll never be able to surpass that flaw.

However, this is undeniably more of the same of love/hate Naruto antics (generally, your love it or you hate it. It Marmite in anime form =O ) so it's not about to change your preconceived notions of the series. If you like Naruto, get it. If you don't, then don't. Simple as really.

3 out of 5 stars Forgettable filler   September 2, 2009
T. R. Alexander (East Anglia, UK)
The filler continues for another thirteen episodes in this volume of the Naruto anime and unfortunately the storylines are pretty much universally uninteresting and forgettable. There is only a single episodes in this set, that being the truly terrible episode 161 `The Appearance of Strange Visitors'. The rest of the episodes are rather basic and somewhat boring. The animation is notisably worse than that from the series proper.

The best storyline in this volume is the Cursed Warrior storyline that despite being quite unoriginal and predictable does have a better plot than the rest of the episodes in this set.
Overall this isn't a truly bad set of episodes just really dull and unoriginal. On the plus side there are only fifty nine episodes of the series left.

3 out of 5 stars Will the filler ever end!?   September 1, 2009

As any hardcore Naruto fan is aware, we are now well into the many, many episodes of filler (used to allow the manga to get ahead of the anime).

Ok so, this set starts with the end of the last story arc- this episode is awful!! Admittedly it did make me laugh (with the animation being so obscure during the Rock Lee vs Raiga fight), the story is ridicules with several characters being "revived" by a curry.... A CURRY!!!

The following episodes are no better with the animation being awful. I'm not going to bother explaining these episodes- they are that bad (although there is a very well designed "cool" looking cowboy style samurai bounty hunter in a couple of these episodes).

Once you reach episode 162 (6 eps in) things do begin to get interesting, yes the animation is still awfull but at least the story is engaging. The story centres around a ghost warrior terrorising a town, Naruto, Neji and Tenten are tasked with discovering the warriors identity. The outcome is very well thought out and it did keep me guessing till the end. (did I mention that the animation is awful?)

The next episode is possibly the most insane episode in the entire anime. The story is as follows- the Ichi Raku Ramen chefs daughter is kidnapped by ninja chefs (you read that right don't worry).
Naruto, Sakura and Choji decide to help get her back- this results in them learning to make noodles... ninja style! if they can impress the lead ninja chef with a decent dish of ramen he will release the girl. Stupid right? I thought so too.

The final episode on the final disc is actually very good, with the animation being taken back up a notch. The story centres around Aunko (sorry about spelling if its wrong)and her relationship with Orochimaru. Although this episode does not directly influence the main story it still feels important and it made me keep watching. The fight scene here is fluid and intense and there are many questions left unanswered to leave a decent cliff-hanger.

I don't want to spoil it for you so I'll end it here. If you decide to buy this set please bear in mind the only really good episode is the last one. When it comes to Naruto I'm actually a bit of a fan boy and I personally think that the last episode alone is worth the purchase. But for those of you who don't care about making your set look incomplete I would say maybe its better to skip this set and wait for the main story arc to start up again.

Thanks for reading

2 out of 5 stars The Mystery of the Cursed Warrior   August 31, 2009
J. Snook (Wales)
Thanks to the curry of life, the heroes are revived and with the help of Rock Lee's drunken fist, the funeral loving Raiga is brought to justice. Part 1 of Series 7 then continues the infamous filler arc and serves up a bit of a mixed bag. This collection of 13 episodes contains a variation of Naruto story arcs which frequently switch between silly one off adventures and ninja missions in foreign villages. It has become evident in previous volumes that the show can pull off both of these with relative ease, however, things start to get a little iffy at this point.

I'll start with the good stuff first. Personally the highlight of this volume are the stand-alone comedy episodes which see Naruto taking Konohamaru on a training mission with disastrous results and teaming up with Choji to make the ultimate batch of ramen. These episodes are easy to watch and are just so silly that you have to laugh - especially the ramen episode. While these episodes don't provide any character growth or intelligent plot, they are far more enjoyable to watch than the 'mission' episodes of the set.

The worst of these 'mission' episodes is a six episode arc (which seemed way longer) that involves Naruto, Neji and Tenten tracking down a ghost in the land of birds. What ensues is an overdrawn plot involving an assasination and a thirst for revenge with a new cast of character who we will never ever see again. While watching this I found the characters incredibly boring and unoriginal, and seeing as the plot revolved around them, I began to lose interest. Not only are the character personalities rubbish, but the actual character art designs have gone downhill, meaning that we get a lot of boring and forgettable characters that create some really hollow episodes. When you place characters from the established cast next to them, such as hyperactive, knucklehead ninja Naruto or Rock 'bushy brows' Lee, then the gap in quality becomes evidently miles wide.

Series 7 part 1 contains another 13 episodes. These are

157.Run! The curry of life!
158.Follow my lead! The great survival challenge!
159.The bounty hunter from the wilderness
160.Hunt of be hunted?! Showdown at the O.K. temple
161.The appearance of strange visitors
162.The cursed warrior
163.The tactician's intent
164.Too late for help
165.The death of Naruto
166.When time stands still
167.When egrets flap their wings
168.Mix it! Stretch it! Boil it up! Burn copper pot! Burn!
169.Remembrance: The lost page

It seems the creators were either getting lazy, or just running out of ideas at this point. Apart from a few funny episodes, this volume doesn't really have anything that will persuade the viewer to keep on watching past this point. If things continue this way, it's going to take a lot patience to get to the end of the show. It's definetly achievable, but at this point, the finishing line has never seemed so far away.
