5 out of 5 stars The curse mark and the Chunin exams.   July 11, 2010

Naruto Unleashed series two is one of the more action and story packed series. In this series we are introduced to the main villain of Naruto Unleashed who also plays a fairly big part in Shippuden his name is, Orochimaru and he's got his sights set on Sasuke.

Series two starts pretty much where the first left off. The ninja who got through the first phase of the Chunin exams are about to begin there dangerous journey through the second phases forest of death. The genin ninja must use the skills they know to battle off agravating enemies and get there hands on the earth and heaven scrolls and get to the tower of the forest within the space of 5 days. This takes up the first half of the series and is named by most fans the Forest of Death arc. There are plenty of twists, turns and battles for the viewer to enjoy and it introduces Orochimaru whom gives this series a much darker tone. He has left his mark on Sasuke and now when the curse mark takes over him he becomes unaware of his deadly strength.

The second half of the series focuses on the aftermath of the Forest of Death events, the skilled ninja are pitted against each other in a preliminary round. This brings some characterisation to all charcters not to mention some really ace fights that will have you on the edge of your seat. The fight between Naruto and Kiba did as did the battle between Gaara and Rock Lee they are fights you should really look out for in this box set.

This season is far superior to the first season in literally every way. More emotionally charged fights, better story, even more fighting, it's darker, it's also a little bit more comic at times. Also the opening song is better than the first season's. (Haruka Kanata by Asian Kung Fu Generation) is a great new opening song. Naruto is a must have for any anime fan or fan of the manga. If you wern't sure whether to by this after the first then do I promise the action just gets better from here on in.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but still suffers from the same problem as the first.   March 22, 2010

I love the characters, the humour, and the setting. But something is holding me back from truly loving Naruto and that is the absolutely horrendous amounts of exposition. Fair enough when the young student ninjas are being trained by their masters but why oh why do enemies in battle have to continually fill each other in on exactly what moves they are doing and how they are going about doing them. I just don't understand the need to slow to a crawl what should be an exhilarating action sequence for a long piece of dialog explaining the whats happening blow by blow, we can see what's happening surely we're smart enough to work it out for ourselves I just want them to get on with the fight as well as the story which very often in Naruto are inexorably linked (and that's to it's credit) and if a jutsu (Ninja Power) happens to be particularly mystical and confusing Naruto's character provides the perfect instrument for explaining it after the battle as he is not particularly well known for his studying skills he could ask one of his classmates, but after the battle is over so as not to slow the action to a grinding halt.
This is not to say that I will not be continuing on with the series, the characters are too endearing, their back stories too intriguing, the growing plot elements too enticing for me to actually give up entirely, I just wish it could all be in a story that didn't keep stop-starting the way it does. Hopefully as the series matures the writers (I am unsure as to whether the fault lies with the original team or the English translators/re-writers as I do not speak Japanese, either way I feel my argument still stands if only against one language version of the series)will show a bit more faith in their viewers' ability to understand the fight sequences.
Well. anyhow, I do like this series (despite how most of this review may make it seem) and I hope to be giving the next and later seasons higher ratings I know that quite a lot of tv series take a couple of seasons to really hit their stride so fingers crossed that is the case here.

5 out of 5 stars The Chûnin Exams   January 29, 2010
Akasaru (Scotland)
Naruto's team and their friends continue their struggle to complete the Chûnin exams, surviving 5 days in the Forest of Death before squaring off against each other in a preliminary third exam. A ninja's life is a hard one.

4 out of 5 stars My Review   July 20, 2009

(NOTE; In Japan when saying someones name, the last name is said first. Please note that from here on, all names will be said as such. Also, where possible, some names, such as places, will be written in Japanese with their English translations in brakects.)

PLOT;
Naruto is a Japanese anime basied on the manga of the same name by Kishimoto Masashi. Set in a Japaniese-like world, Uzumaki Naruto, a young boy from a nation known as Hi no Kni(?) (Country of Fire). Naruto, being an orphan and who also has the soul of the Kyuubi (Nine-tailed Deamon Fox) within him, is hated by the local populace. He seeks to become understood by everyone by becoming the Hokage (Fire Shadow) of Konohagakure no sato (Hidden Villege of Leaves or Hidden Leaf Villege)
To do this, he enrolls into the towns Ninja Academy, since the Hokage is the towns best Ninja, he must train hard to do so.
The second complete series of Naruto is about Naruto and his team taking the Chunin (Middle-Ranked Ninja) Exams so that they may advance in rank. The second series also introduces other main charcters to the anime, such as Rock Lee, Hyuuga Neji, Sabaku no Gaara (Gaara of the Desert) and others, who have their own reasons for taking the Chunin Exams.

My Review
Being a very big Naruto fan, I had been waiting to buy the series for a while, but it is so exspensive in the major high-street shops which I had gone into. But my mother uses Amazon and advised me to use it, so I did, and got Naruto Series 2 for much cheaper than I would have got in the high street.
While I am fan of Naruto, I can see the typical Americanisation in this version of the anime. Dispite the fact that I'm glad about the fact it has the origonal Japanese soundtrack and English subtitles, it's more the fact that I have seen much better fan-subs when it comes to trasnlations that dissapoints me. I am no expert in speaking Japanese, but a know a word or two, and at times I was shaking my head at the translations used in the DVD. I know it does not sound like much, but I belive that it's respectful to use the right translations when it comes to subbing. Also, the fact that they took out Japanese suffexes such as "san", "kun" or "sama" for exsample, was a bit dissapointing, instend replacing them with Western titles like "Mr." or "Lord", which again, I think is a little disrepectful.
Also, I wish they would keep the nouns, such as Naruto's "Kage Bushin no Justu" insted of, again, replaceing them with Westen interpritations such as "Shadow Clone", which, although is the closest, I belive, again it's not very respectful. Big fans like myself don't want to see the nouns of Ninja moves translated into English. We want to see the origonal names. Maybe the offical DVD's should do what many fan-subs do; Have the Japanese name of the Ninjistu along with the standard subtitles at the bottom of the screen, and put the English translation in paragraphs at the top of the screen.
And would it have killed them to take away the short five second screens after the intro and after the ending which was used to advertise? The only use for them now is if we wanna take a screen shot for out PC desktops. XD
That being said, I'm really happy with the DVD. Watching fan-subs for so long on other websites in poor quality made me forget just how good DVD's are and how good the Naruto anime looks.
Overall 4 Stars. (I knock one Star off for not having as good a traslation for the subtitles as un-offical fan subs that I have seen.)

3 out of 5 stars The show is great but the DVD is sub-par   October 22, 2008

The episodes themselves I give 5/5. This is some of the best that Naruto has to offer. They are constantly entertaining and action-packed. Don't worry about that.

The DVDs are, however, a disappointment. They have both the english dub, which is fairly good, and the japanese. However, the subtitles are merely the words of the dub. This means that to those of you who speak japanese and can understand the audio, this is going to grate. It also means that there are times when there is japanese audio but no accompanying subtitle, or vice-versa. The first season box set had subtitles that were translated from the Japanese, why couldn't this one?

In addition, neither the opening nor closing songs have subtitles. Again, the first season didn't have this problem, they translated them. Fansubbing groups have been giving us karaoke openings for free for years, and a company that's making money off of this can't give us plain old subs? Poor showing. In addition, the space after the opening that was used during broadcast to announce the show's sponsors is left on, but with the voice edited out. This means that there's a little 10 second pause after each opening. This could and should have been edited out.

All in all the presentation of the DVD smacks of laziness and corners cut. A decent set of subtitles that were directly translated from the Japanese is a necessity for a DVD like this. I give the DVDs presentation 2/5
